Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery; the Fourth Paradigm

There is a sea change happening in academic research -- a transformation caused by a data deluge that is affecting all disciplines.  Modern science increasingly relies on integrated information technologies and computation to collect, process, and analyze complex data.  It was Ken Wilson, Nobel Prize winner in physics, who coined the phrase “Third Paradigm” to refer to computational science and the need for computational researchers to know about algorithms, numerical methods, and parallel architectures.   However, the skills needed for manipulating, visualizing, managing, and, finally, conserving and archiving scientific data are very different.

“The Fourth Paradigm” is about data and the computational systems needed to manipulate, visualize, and manage large amounts of scientific data.  A wide variety of scientists  – biologists, chemists, physicists, astronomers, engineers – require tools, technologies, and platforms that seamlessly integrate into standard scientific methodologies and processes.

This talk will illustrate the far-reaching changes that this new paradigm will have on scientific discovery.

  3. Submission Deadline:  March 1, 2010

Indiana University invites position papers for the NSF-sponsored workshop, Campus Bridging Technologies, to be held April 7-8, 2010 at University Place Conference Center (UPCC) on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.

This workshop will explore networking and data-centric issues that currently challenge U.S. researchers and generate a set of recommendations for the identification and implementation of processes, tools, and solicitations to achieve better coordination of cyberinfrastructure. Improved coordination of cyberinfrastructure will serve to optimize innovation and discovery by the U.S. science and engineering communities.

  6. The Center for Statistical and Mathematical Computing (Stat/Math Center) of the Research Technologies division of UITS, has a two-fold mission of software licensing and support. The center licenses over 30 software packages that help the IU research and teaching community with statistics, mathematics, and geographic information systems (GIS). These packages include widely-used programs such as SAS, SPSS, Maple, Matlab, and ArcGIS (remote sensing software). More specialized programs are supported based on user needs. The software distribution program through the Stat/Math Center results in millions of dollars in cost avoidance annually for Indiana University System.

In support of the IndianaMap Project, the center maintains enterprise geodatabase and map publishing services for Indiana University and the general public. The center also coordinates annual UITS User Satisfaction Surveys for IUB, IUPUI, and IU regional campuses and publishes findings.

Support at the Stat/Math Center takes many forms including:

-- Advice on how to implement various statistical tests and methods.
-- Technical support for installation and upgrading packages.
-- Applying numerical analysis to speed up complex calculations.
-- Providing access to Indiana’s massively large geospatial datasets
-- Support for geospatial technology research, instruction and administration.
-- Providing statistical software workshops (SAS and SPSS)
-- Online documentation, KB items, tutorials, archived GIS data.
-- Large group discounts on software licensing.
    -- Collaboration with research faculty.

You can contact the Stat Math Center by sending an email to:
