OSL Abstract Accepted at SIAM CSE Conference
OSL staff members' abstract was accepted for a lecture presentation at the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (SIAM CSE). The abstract was written by Randy Heiland, Charles Perry, Barbara Ream and Andrew Lumsdaine.
The group presents a project for middle and high school students that blends mathematics and computer science with art appreciation. The goal is to model a challenging geometric sculpture, the Indiana Arc (pictured). After some basic instruction in the Python scripting language, students use their math skills to generate 3D geometric data and then visualize and analyze it using open source software. The project also pays homage to "Geometry and the Imagination," by Hilbert and Cohn-Vossen.
Be sure to check out the Indiana Arc by artist Charles Perry, which is located right outside the Indiana University Art Museum on 7th Street on the IU Bloomington campus.
