Bedrock Access Methods: Hierarchical Storage Interface (HSI)

HSI is a Unix shell like utility to access the IU Bedrock system from a Unix workstation. To start using hsi, simply download and install a binary on your workstation. HSI is currently available under Windows via Cygwin.

To learn more about HSI in general, check out the on-line documentation. To learn more about HSI at IU, check out the Knowledge Base.

HSI Client Changes

The version 3.5.3 of hsi/htar is for HPSS 7.1. HPSS is scheduled to be upgraded to 7.1 on Dec. 5, 2009 and hsi/htar 3.5.3 should be used after that. Version 3.4 binaries won't work with HPSS 7.1.

You will either need to use the appropriate binaries (select from table below), or compile hsi/htar yourself. In either case, you will need the HPSS.conf file. It should go in one of /var/hpss/etc, /usr/local/etc or /cygwin/usr/local/etc (for cygwin). Do not change the capitalization of the file name.

Notes

  • GSI versions above have support for GSI compiled in. If you don't have globus libraries, you should avoid using them.
